Imperva, database and application Security Company today announce the most insecure and most commonly used passwords on social networking or e-commerce sites. This study is based on the 32 million passwords recently exposed in the Rockyou.com breach consumer passwords.
Imperva’s CTO Amichai Shulman explained, “Everyone needs to understand what the combination of poor passwords means in today’s world of automated cyber attacks: with only minimal effort, a hacker can gain access to one new account every second—or 1000 accounts every 17 minutes. The data provides a unique glimpse into the way that users select passwords and an opportunity to evaluate the true strength of passwords as a security mechanism. Never before has there been such a high volume of real-world passwords to examine.”

The top 10 most commonly used (and most insecure) passwords are,

- Password
- iloveyou
- princess
- rockyou
- 1234567
- 12345678
- abc123
This study also found that, nearly 50 percent of users uses their names, slang words, dictionary words, consecutive digits, adjacent keyboard keys which are known as lower alpha passwords means only letters from a to z and numbers combination of 0 to 9 (refer graph).
