6 years ago, on January 22, 2004, Google employee Orkut Büyükkökten creates a small concept of global social networking and site designed in such a way that it help users meet new friends and maintain existing relationships with slogan of ‘who do you know?’ As of December 2009, Orkut has more than 80 million active users worldwide. Most of the Orkut users are from Brazil (51.09%), India (20.02%) and United States with 17.28 percent. Today Google celebrating Orkut’s 6th birthday!
In those 6 years Orkut adopts many new features including twice redesign. On August 31, 2007 announced the initial release of Orkut in 6 new Indian languages, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu and other features includes, Videos or pictures posting, personalization theme support, video chat, friend’s updates and many more…
From last year Google made many changes in Orkut which include,
- Launched inline photo comments.
- Redesigned our help forum.
- Better community controls.
- Built an application for mobile phones.
- Offered face detection for your Orkut photos.
- Integrated chat to Orkut.
- Introduced Orkut promote.
- Created a free, integrated video chat tool.
- Launched an entirely redesigned version of Orkut.
And there are more surprises to come in early 2010 in Orkut user interface and services, some of them are, user profile with 40 different colors, share’ bookmarklet (share on Orkut button) and a brand new photo experience. Anyways, Orkut is one of the most popular website in India, especially in youth. It is time to celebrate Orkuts 6th Birthday. Happy Birthday Orkut!
