On internet there are tons of  software available for speed up your windows XP operating system. Some are paid as well as free.If you don’t want to spend some extra money and you don’t believe on freeware then here are some tips to boost performance of your windows XP without any external paid or free software.

Defragment your hard drive weekly:
This is one of the most common and known way of boost windows XP speed. But we often miss it. De-fragmentation arranges data in hard drive in such a manner so it can be read continuously. Data scattered at multiple locations on the hard drive, de-fragmentation arrange the data in neat manner. Result of defragment your hard drive regularly can reduce the searching for data on HDD and makes your PC faster. The process should be done at least once every week.

Disable Windows Index Service:
Windows indexes files continuously. But we don’t use this service on regular basis; best way to speed up the PC is to disable this service.
For this operation just go to Settings> Control Panel > Administrative Tools > services and stop Windows Index Service.

Remove unnecessary Fonts:
We always install the fonts manually to change the fonts styles mainly in Microsoft office application. If you feel that this font is no longer useful for you, just delete it or copy unnecessary font to other drive and delete it from the Fonts folder.
Fonts folder can be found in Settings> Control Panel > Fonts

Disk Cleanup utility:
Disk Cleanup utility allow user to find files that are no longer of any use. By deleting those files you can use free space for storage.

This utility also useful for removing temporary Internet files, removing downloaded program  files, empty the Recycle Bin, removing Windows temporary files, removing optional Windows components and removing installed program that are no longer in use.

Delete temporary internet files:
Temporary internet files are those files which are downloaded while browsing. You can delete those files for space as well as boost windows XP performance.
Just go to Start> Run and type %temp% Select all the files and delete them.(While this process it might happen that some files may not delete, leave them as it is because those files are in use at that time. Next time when you start the computer, immediately go to temp folder and delete them.)

Delete some files/folders form system 32 folder:

System32, a special system folder on Microsoft Windows operating systems that is part of the architecture of Windows NT. Don’t delete all the files from system 32 folder. Just delete those files or folder with blue color name. normally those files are downloaded while windows update process.
You can find system 32 folder on C:WINDOWSsystem32 (Just copy and paste this in My Computers address bar with your original windows XP installation path i.e. C: or D:).

Remove recently used files:

On Start > documents menu, we often see some files which are recently opened by the user. To remove those files just taskbar and go to Properties select start menu tab and click on customize button and select clear option to clear records of recently accessed documents, programs, websites.
This help to free some system memory and increase the speed of PC.

Increase your windows XP overall speed by approximately 30 percent:
As all we know, windows XP is operating system uses more graphics and animations while opening or closing Microsoft applications as well as other program too. If you are work enthusiasts rather than just use windows XP for entertainment purpose, then just do this trick and see the results.
Right click on My Computer icon on desktop and go to properties > choose advanced tab and go to performance settings> in visual effects select Adjust for best performance option and apply it.

After applying this option (Adjust for best performance) your windows XP user interface looks like a windows 98.But if you see the performance of overall applications, it is better and fast than previous user interface.
